Oil & Gas UK launches new Health Award

Oil & Gas UK is on the search for nominations for the Oil and Gas Industry Safety Awards 2014. The aim of the awards – which will be held in April – is to recognise the people and companies in the UK that strive to ensure the safety of the Gas and oil industry.

For this year’s awards a new category has been introduced. The Health award will be given to the company, organisation or individual that has done the most to help improve the health of their employees.

Oil & Gas UK says that it introduced the new health award because it wanted to recognise the amount of hard work that gas and oil companies have invested in improving the health of the workforce and believe that their efforts should be recognised.

Talking about the Health award, Robert Paterson, Oil & Gas UK Health and Safety Director, explained how the safety category of the awards is still the most important. He went on to say that the biggest concern was the accidental release of hydrocarbon. This is something that has been on the increase in recent years and Oil and Gas UK are looking for “innovative” ways to reverse this trend.

Commenting in a press release, Step Change in Safety team leader, Les Linklater, said:

“By recognising the people and companies striving to improve safety across the industry, these annual awards have become the most prestigious safety awards in the industry.  Last year we saw some inspirational members of the workforce and I am really looking forward to meeting this year’s nominees.”

“It doesn’t matter what job you do: whether you’re a leader, safety rep or trainee. If you’re playing your part to keep safety at the top of the agenda I’d urge you to get your entry in before the deadline of 21 February.”

The UK Offshore Oil and Gas Industry Safety Awards are held on an annual basis. The event receives sponsorship from Maersk Oil; Oil & Gas UK and Step Change in Safety organise the awards.

During the course of the evening there will also be awards for safety leadership, Safety Representative of the Year, Most Promising Individual, Preventative Safety Action, Workforce Engagement and Ideas in Safety, which will give a £5,000 award for the team that can demonstrate how to reduce or prevent hydrocarbon leaks.

Companies have until 21st February to make their nominations and the awards will be made on 30th April at the Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre. The Hon Sir Charles Haddon-Cave will be at the event to give the keynote speech.
